Leona M. Barber, age 97, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Avera Yankton Care Center.
Funeral services are 2:00 PM, on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend David Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service on Thursday.
Leona was born October 13, 1914 at Sutherland, Iowa to Hans Henry Ferdinand and Alma Dora (Wittrock) Matz. As a small girl, she moved with her family to Hartford, South Dakota. She attended grade school in Minnehaha County District 54 and graduated from Hartford High School in 1932. Leona was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Calumet, Iowa and was confirmed at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church at Hartford, South Dakota in 1928. Leona married Myron T. Barber on February 18, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Hartford. In the fall of 1947, they moved to Yankton, South Dakota. Myron worked for the Extension Service and Leona was a homemaker and interested and helpful in all of the Extension organizations. She joined the Friendship Extension Club in 1948. In 1961, she was given the honor of being the Yankton County Homemaker of the Year which was sponsored by the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce. Leona worked as a part time real estate salesman for several years after her husband's retirement from the SD State University Extension Service. In January 2009, she became a resident of Avera Yankton Care Center. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton, the Ruth Circle, the Senior Citizen Center and the T & T Folk Dancers for many years. Leona also enjoyed reading and playing whist. Concern for her family was among her highest priorities.
Leona is survived by her son, Charles Barber of Yankton; daughter, Charlene L. Barber of Hillsboro Beach, Florida; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Verna Mae (Dalton) Mugge of Okoboji, Iowa and Arlene Selk of Denver, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Myron on March 16, 1982; two brothers, Alvin and Ray Matz; and a sister, Bernice Brentro.
Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Radio Broadcast at 1009 Jackson St. in Yankton.
