Aftercare Programs

Enter the Journey

Sheila Kramer leads a 4 week educational program held in the spring and fall of the year.  There is no cost to attend and is open to anyone who has suffered a loss and wants to learn more about grief and the feelings they are experiencing.

Weekly Program Topics:

  • Expectations on the Journey
  • Embracing the Uniqueness of Your Grief
  • Exploring Grief
  • Experiencing Life Beyond.

Memorial Day Service and Open House

At 10:00 am on Memorial Day at the entrance of the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton, the VFW and American Legion offer a 21 gun salute and play Taps.  We then read all the veterans names buried in the cemetery to remember and honor them and their families for the sacrifices they have made to our great country.  The program ends with a special song, “God Bless the USA”. We serve coffee and rolls in our Hospitality Center right next door from 8:30 to 11:30.

Remembrance Program

On the second Saturday in December at 5:00 pm, we hold our Remembrance Program to remember and honor all the families we’ve served in the past year.  It’s an emotional service filled with special music, a message from a local clergy, a candle lighting ceremony and video tribute. At the conclusion of the program, families can take an angel ornament from our remembrance tree.

The Solitaires

The Solitaires is group of ladies whose husbands have passed away.  They meet at the Hospitality Center at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton on the third Wednesday of the month from April to November.  It is more of a social group with a potluck starting at 6:00 pm and then a speaker or entertainment at 6:45 pm. The programs are not grief related but range from a variety of different topics.  The year concludes in November with a Holiday Party.

For more information on the different programs we offer, please call us at 605 665-3644.

Coping with Grief, Death, and Dying

Sheila has been a great asset to our funeral home and has over 25 years of counseling experience.  Our aftercare program is based on the teachings of Dr. Alan Wolfelt, who is a leading grief educator in the country.  For more information about his companioning philosophy and his Center for Loss, you can visit him online at

Why Aftercare Is Important

Losing a loved one is a very difficult time for all of us. After the services are over, we begin the transition to a life that's changed. Through the support and love from our family and friends and going through the mourning process, we reconcile our grief and the difficult times turn into wonderful memories of the love that was shared. As a service to the families served, we offer free professional grief education to learn more about the mourning process. We invite anyone who has suffered a loss to be a part of our Enter the Journey Program or you can meet privately with our professional Grief Educator, Sheila Kramer.
